・In the previous version of the programs, there was an error in placement of displayed words on the buttons in Chart mode when used in French language. You can correct the position of the buttons to show "Object" and "Menu" with installation of the update program. We apologize for causing you trouble in this matter.


■ Go-To Function for Comets

Go-to system can be implemented for comets by entering the comet's orbital elements available to general public.

■ Go-To Speed Control

The speed of celestial go-to system can be reduced to about 1/2 of the original speed. It reduces the noise generated when go-to function is performed.

■ Display the names of Bright Stars and Messier Objects

The names of prominent bright fixed stars and Messier objects can be displayed on the screen. The manner of displaying the names can be selected from "Always ON","Always OFF" and steps at zooming

■ Error Correction in Build29

In the initial edition of STAR　BOOK-TypeS,Ver1.2 Build29, an alignment error has been found to occur when the latitude of observing location changes. This problem should be solved by installing Build35.


Please note: STAR BOOK-TypeS will be turned off automatically when the value of latitude or longitude of observing location is changed and new values are saved. The new values become effective at the restart of the program.

Warning for Update

  1. The version upgrades are provided as a set. A function cannot be installed as a single feature.
  2. eCos is used in part of this software.
    Based on the license issued by eCos, users can obtain the source code used in the eCos part. Please contact Vixen for the detail.
Exemption

In case of any damage experienced by a customer when installing or using this software or any charge sent by a third party to a customer due to the damage, the company or dealers do not take responsibility unless the customer is not responsible or the company was intentional or negligent.

Update Procedure

Before you begin

  • Please use new batteries when you upgrade the current version of your STAR BOOK-TypeS. Also, use a stable power outlet for the PC to which data is forwarded.
    There may be a problem when re-starting STAR BOOK-TypeS if the power is turned off during the upgrading process. In such cases, contact a dealer to request a repair. (Please note that the setting may be initialized during the repair. )
  • The network setting of the PC may have to be changed to update the program. Please save the settings so that they can be retrieved after the upgrade.
  • The current settings in STAR BOOK-TypeS (such as Latitude/Longitude of observing location) may be initialized during a version update. Please take a note or save the settings before you start the update.

  3. PC to which the data is forwarded （LAN card for a model without a LAN terminal)
    ※ Please see your PC (or LAN card) manual about the detail of LAN cards.

Download Procedure

■ When connecting STAR BOOK-TypeS to your PC

※Click below if you are connecting STAR BOOK-TypeS directly to LAN environment or a router.

» When using LAN or a router

  1. Download one of the following STAR BOOK-TypeS update programs before connecting to a PC.
    2. Button:For Windows XP
    Button:For Windows 98SE、ME

  2. Connect the STAR BOOK-TypeS and the PC with the LAN crossover cable.
    ※ As for a connection of the LAN cable to the PC, please refer to the instructions for the PC.
  3. Turn on the STAR BOOK-TypeS.
  4. Turn on the PC.

  1. Wait for a period of one minute. The STAR BOOK-TypeS and PC acquire information on networking automatically.
  2. In the System Menu of the STAR BOOK-TypeS, scroll down the cursor the select "About STAR BOOK" and press Select key to enter. Confirm that the following IP Address and Subnet Mask numbers are displayed.
    ・IP Address： 169.254.a.b（a,b are arbitrary numbers）
    ・SubNet Mask： 255.255.0.0
  3. Double click on the downloaded program file(Such as Build30.exe)to run the program.
    ※ In Windows Vista a dialog box shown on the left (User Account Control) comes out for warning. Select "Allow" (A) Itrust this program to proceed.
  4. Enter the IP Address as you obtained at 6. Click on the OK button.
  5. Wait for a few minutes until the message on the left appears on the screen.
  6. Turn off the STAR BOOK-TypeS to reboot. Turn on the STAR BOOK-TypeS agein. Scroll down the cursor to go into "About STAR BOOK". Confirm that the version is updated.
  7. Your update is finished successfully. (Go back to the previous settings of the PC if you changed for the update.)

If the procedure above does not work

※ If your update is unsuccessful, follow the directions below to change settings of the PC. (For Windows XP and Windows Vista, administrator authorization is required.)

<IP Adress Confirmation> (For Windows Vista)
  1. Click on Start (S) and go into Control Panel (C).
  2. Click on the Control Panel and select the icon of "Network and Sharing Center".
  3. Click on the "Manage Network Connections" in the right column.
  4. "Local Area Connection - Details"
    Confirm that the following numbers are set in the dialog box.
    ・IPv4 IP Address：169.254.a.b（a,b are arbitrary numbers)
    ・IPv4 Subnet Mask：255.255.0.0

If the numbers for your PC are different from the above numbers or if the "DHCP server is available" is selected to "NO", there is a possibility that a check mark for "Obtain IP address automatically" is removed. Follow the procedure below to change the settings and obtain the IP address automatically.

  1. Click on Start (S) and go into Control Panel (C) to select "Internet Option" in it.
  2. "Internet Properties" dialog box is opened. Select "Connection Tab - LAN Settings".
  3. Confirm that a check box for "Use Proxy Server for LAN" in the lower center is not marked. If the box is checked,remove the check mark. (Remember to return to the previous setting when you finish the download.)
  4. Go back to 6 in the above download procedure.

<IP Address Confirmation> (For Windows®XP)
  1. Control Panel − Network and Internet Connection − Network Connection
  2. Select the icon for Local Area Connection
  3. Click on "Display Network Information" shown on the left.
  4. Click on "Support"
    Confirm the following settings in the dialog box.
    ・IP Address：169.254.a.b（a,b are arbitrary numbers)
    ・Subnet Mask：255.255.0.0

If you see different values, it may not be set to "obtain the IP address automatically." Please follow the below procedure to change the setting.

  1. In Control Panel, select "Network and Internet Connection - Internet Option."
  2. Select "Connection Tab - LAN Settings."
  3. Make sure the checkbox for "Use Proxy Server for LAN" in the lower center is checked OFF.
    →If the box is checked, please uncheck the box. (Make sure to check the box after the update process is complete.)
  4. Go to the procedure 6 above.

<IP Address Confirmation> (For Windows®98SE, ME)
  1. Select "Run" in the start menu.
  2. Enter "winipcfg" and click the OK button.
  3. Select an appropriate LAN card that connects to the STAR BOOK-TypeS in the pull-down menu, and confirm the following settings below.
    ・Automatically Set IP Address：169.254.c.d （c,d are aibitrary numbers）
    ・Subnet Mask： 255.255.0.0
  4. If the settings are correct, go to the procedure 6 above.

If you see different values, it may not be set to &quot;obtina the IP address automatically.&quot; Please follow the below procedure to change the setting.

  1. In Control Panel, select "Network."
  2. Select "TCP/IP->STAR BOOK-TypeS and LAN card" in the pull-down menu in the current network componet (N). Then press Properties.
    A dialog box, "TCP/IP Property"opens.
  3. Select the IP address tab, and press the button, "Obtain IP address automatically "(O).
  4. Press OK twice and disconnect the network.
  5. A dialog box asking to restart appears. Press Yes.
  6. Go to the procedure 6 above.
■ When connecting to a LAN environment or a router

If connected to a LAN environment or a router that has a DHCP server, STAR BOOK-TypeS will acquire the network address from DHCP server automatically at the startup.

Execute the followings when DHCP server exists.

If DHCP server does not exist, execute the procedure for a one-to-one connection.

(If the network environment is unknown, contact the administrator or the manufacturer of the router.)

  1. Connect STAR BOOK-TypeS to a LAN environment or a router.
  2. Turn on the power of STAR BOOK-TypeS.
  3. Go through the procedure 6 and the rest of the steps above if you are using one-to-one connection.
